Four automated teller machines (ATMs) were found to be fitted with skimming devices designed not only to copy information from credit cards, but also to record the PIN entered by the cardholder. New Zealand authorities have already confirmed 500 victims.

According to NZ Herald, a gang of crooks is running around fitting ATMs from ANZ and National Bank with skimmers.

For the time being it’s uncertain how much money was stolen from the victims, but one of them claims that $1,300 (975 EUR) were withdrawn from his bank account from Bangkok.

Another man received a call from the National Bank after the financial institution’s representatives noticed that large amounts of money were being withdrawn from his account in South Africa.

Authorities hope to catch the fraudsters in action, but in the meantime their investigation revealed that the fraudsters may be from overseas.
