The RSA Conference 2013 is an event attended by the IT security professionals of many important organizations. This means it’s also a great place to make a relevant survey.

nCircle has performed such a survey only to learn that 50% of the 205 respondents believe their organizations represent a potential target for state-sponsored cyberattacks.

33% of the subjects say they believe the US has the most advanced cyber capabilities. Unsurprisingly, 48% have named China as the country possessing the most advanced capabilities for state-sponsored attacks.

“The number of organizations that are potential targets for state-sponsored cyber attacks is probably much higher than 50%, because if attackers can't break into a targeted organization, they will go after partners and suppliers,” explained Tim Keanini, chief research officer for nCircle.

Keanini also noted that the public perception was clearly influenced by the recent media coverage.

“The reality is that nations that are really good at cyber attacks don't make the news because they don't get caught. China appears to have a large number of cyber 'soldiers' but we don't have any other public point of reference yet,” he added.
