Even if web connectivity is a major element that makes them “smart”, it often goes unused

Samsung recently got into a fairly tight spot with KT over how the latter had blocked Internet access to the apps on about 250,000 of its Smart TVs.

This went to show that web access is a major asset that makes a Smart TV, well, smart.

It turns out, though, that it doesn't take a disgruntled Internet provider to have Smart TVs without web connectivity.

In fact, according to recent research, about half of all the Smart TVs sold thus far stay offline.

This implies that social networking and online games are seldom used via TV, since people have a laptop or desktop for that. The “very, very complex and unintuitive user interfaces” are blamed for it.

All in all, only 47% of all people who own Internet-enabled TVs actually use that capability, ironically enough.
