It looks like the battle between hip hop "titans" (OK, maybe that's a rather strong word - let's put a friendly spin on it and call them "top sellers") Kanye West and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is taking a rather unexpected turn. And unfortunately for "Fiddy" things are looking rather down for him, with clear signs that his younger, more charismatic rival will indeed outsell him.
After he went live to say that he would quit his solo career if Kanye's album "Graduation" outsold his new album "Curtis", it looks like Jackson (or rather his ego) managed to dig a huge hole for himself. Tracks mysteriously leaked from each of the two albums to be released on September 11th have been getting mixed reviews, but on the whole it sounds like people have started to see Fifty Cent as a bit of a joke.
One of the reasons for which we hear more and more about what has been called "50 Cent and Eminem's fall from hip-hop's lofty perch" appears to be
THIS NEW 50 CENT TRACK called "Peep Hole". And in case there were any questions connected to what it is about...well, surprise, it's all about having dirty sex and liking it just a little too much. Fifty and Eminem sing about strippers and what Fifty and Eminem would do to them in bed - so far, as I was saying, no surprise, but the rhymes sound like they've been written by a guy with no experience in the area and who suffers from chronic pornographic nightmares.
"Shawty, I like the way she move them hips/ I'm trying to get her in my bedroom and s**t." Umm, is it just me or does that sound a little...off? And that's not even the worst of it, I'm afraid, as he raps like that during the entire song. Eminem (predictably) goes for the humorous side and tries to make everything sound funny and relaxed - but again, we've heard this too many times before to be shocked: "We gonna f**k, I just popped this little blue pill/ You could leave, but wait, I gotta shit on you still (fart sound)". That, I'm afraid, has all the marks of being one gross song. And while I'm sure that having sex with strippers is fun, this perspective has either been used one too many times, or the boys have finally had one sex romp too many and are losing their touch.
The word in the hip hop world is, 50 Cent remains confident of his chances of coming out on top in his chart battle with Kanye West. The rapper confirmed this last week when he gave a statement for San Diego's 93.3 radio station in which he said that "Its not possible for Kanye to beat me, I don't know why I said that. Its like the teddy bear vs. the gorilla. Def Jam [West's label] is going to buy about 200,000 of Kanye's records. Kanye sucks, I'm going to be honest, he sounds like a robot, he has a robot record".
Is it just me, or does this guy sound just a little bit jealous? It's going to be interesting to see how he will justify his losses the moment the inevitable happens and Kanye's album sells better than his. Stay tuned, as it looks like it's going to be one very packed month - and September 11th can't come too quickly!
