DVD Shrink

This oldie on the list used to be godsend in its glorious days when the use of DVDs was spreading like wildfire. DVD Shrink is its name and it has not been updated since 2004; not too long ago some might say, but calculating it in application lifespan, this easily translates into several generations. It works on Vista (although some users couldn't make it run on this OS) and on Windows 7 it is not troublesome either.

The purpose of DVD Shrink is solely to back up your DVDs easily and painlessly. Most importantly, it is free of charge and the size of the installer is ridiculously small: ~ 1MB. As its name suggests, DVD Shrink has been built to offer you the possibility of fitting a DVD 9 or larger movie onto a DVD 5 one (a regular 4.7 GB one).

Despite being an old timer, the interface of DVD Shrink does not show its age at all. It has a neat interface that can't possibly cause trouble working with regardless of the skill level of the user. Immediately after the application finishes to analyze the disc it will list all its content letting you choose the data to preserve on the backup. You extract menu items, extra elements, language files, audio tracks, etc.

Shrinking a larger DVD movie is not random, but according to preset sizes in the application or to a custom ratio. DVD Shrink can also be used to burn the backup to a disc, but for this you need to install Nero. However, storing the file on the disk is no problem as backup options allow you to set a local folder for the output file.

All DVD movies can be previewed before proceeding to action and while the app is performing the backup operation you will always be aware of the part of the movie that is being compressed. Apart from all this DVD Shrink can handle movie images as well.

So DVD Shrink is yet another application that runs on both Vista and Windows 7 despite not being updated since 2004. And it still has some stamina left as the age of DVD is not even close to the finish.
