Five people have been killed in Federal Way, Washington, 20 miles (32 km) from Seattle in a shooting, reports say.

Police were called in to an apartment building at the Federal Way suburb at around 9:30 p.m. yesterday, after repeated gun shots were reported.

The suspect has been killed in an exchange of fire with local law enforcement, the Calgary Herald informs, citing the Associated Press.

Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock tells reporters that the first officers at the scene interrupted a gun fight in a parking lot of the apartment complex. After calling for back-up, they approached the scene, spotting victims of the shooting.

Schrock detailed that two people had been shot and were lying on the ground when police stepped in to check on them. A suspect who intended to open fire at law enforcement was gunned down by a second team of officers.

Two other victims, a man and a woman, were uncovered in separate apartments in the Washington complex. They had suffered fatal gunshot wounds prior to the shootout outside.

An investigation is underway to reveal if the woman was a collateral casualty in the shooting, Schrock adds.

The motivation for the altercation has not been revealed at this point, but police are questioning residents in a quest for more information about the relationship between the shooter and the victims.

No officers have been injured during the operation and the identity of the gunman has not been released at this point. Officials believe that there are no other accomplices to the attack on the loose.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, investigators are close to identifying one of two men opening fire at the Civic Center Park. Three people were injured in a shooting during a 4/20 rally on Saturday, April 20.
