4MLinux developer Zbigniew Konojacki‏ informs us today on the availability for download of the beta release of the upcoming 4MLinux 24.0 operating system.

Nearly two weeks after the release of the 4MLinux 23.0 new stable series of the independently-developed GNU/Linux operating system, development on the next major release starts now with the availability of 4MLinux 24.0 Core Beta, which will be used as the base system for 4MLinux 24.0 and all related products.

Powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.9.52 kernel, 4MLinux 24.0 Core Beta uses the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7.1.0 as default compiler to offer applications designed for the i686 (32-bit) hardware architecture. The Core edition doesn't have a graphical UI and ships only with BusyBox 1.27.2 and GNU C Library (Glibc) 2.25.

"This is a core system (only about 10 MB in size) for the 4MLinux 24 series. The system includes the Linux kernel 4.9.52, GNU C Library 2.25, and BusyBox 1.27.2," reads the release announcement. "The 4MLinux 24 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 7.1.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture."

4MLinux 24.0 launching in March 2018

An interesting feature of the 4MLinux 24.0 Core Beta release is support for all possible boot options, including systems using BIOS on 32-bit or 64-bit processors, as well as UEFI machines running either 32-bit or 64-bit firmware. You can download the live ISO image right now from our website if you want to take it for a test drive.

4MLinux 24.0 Beta release is expected by the end of the week, but the final release of the operating system will launch next year in March when the 4MLinux 22.0 series will reach end of life. Therefore, users are currently urged to update to the recently released 4MLinux 23.0 stable branch as soon as possible.
