4MLinux developer Zbigniew Konojacki has informed us about the availability for download and testing of the Beta release of the upcoming 4MLinux 18.0 operating system.

The Core edition of 4MLinux 18.0 has been released on May 8, 2016, powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel and using GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 5.3.0 to compile the pre-installed packages, which are available, as usual, only for the 32-bit (i686) hardware architecture.

Additionally, it looks like 4MLinux Core 18.0 Beta ships with the GNU C Library 2.23 and BusyBox 1.24.2 components. While not mentioned in the brief release announcement, the Beta build of 4MLinux Core 18.0 contains various other updates GNU/Linux technologies and security patches.

"This is a core system (only a few MB in size) for the 4MLinux 18.0 series. The system includes: the Linux kernel 4.4.8, GNU C Library 2.23, and BusyBox 1.24.2. The 4MLinux 18.0 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 5.3.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture," said Zbigniew Konojacki.

4MLinux 18.0 coming soon

Now that the Core edition of 4MLinux 18.0 is out for testing, Zbigniew Konojacki will work hard in the coming days to also release the Beta of the 4MLinux 18.0 distribution, which, of course, will be based on this Core flavor. 4MLinux Core can also be used by anyone who wants to build a custom 4MLinux-based operating system.

If you're interesting in helping the 4MLinux developer find any bugs or annoyances in the upcoming 4MLinux 18.0 distribution, we recommend downloading the live ISO image of 4MLinux Core 18.0 Beta via our website and take it for a test drive. Please note that this edition of the 4MLinux operating system doesn't ship with a graphical desktop environment.
