Softpedia has been informed by 4MLinux developer Zbigniew Konojacki about the general availability of his 4MLinux 17.0 independent, desktop-oriented GNU/Linux distribution.

After being in development for the past few months, 4MLinux 17.0 hits the stable channel today, May 1, 2016, bringing lots of updated software packages, the latest GNU/Linux technologies, as well as various under-the-hood improvements and fixes for the most annoying issues reported by users.

"The status of the 4MLinux 17.0 series has been changed to STABLE," says Zbigniew Konojacki in the release announcement. "You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.4.1, Apache 2.4.20, MariaDB 10.1.13, and PHP 5.6.20). Perl 5.22.1 and Python 2.7.11 are also available."

What's new in 4MLinux 17.0

Among the updated applications pre-installed in the 4MLinux 17.0 GNU/Linux distribution, we can mention the LibreOffice 5.1.3.1 office suite, Mozilla Firefox 46.0 web browser, Chromium 50.0.2661.75 web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.0 email and news client, Skype for Linux 4.3.0.37 VoIP client, and Audacious 3.7.2 audio player.

Continuing, the aTunes 3.1.2 music player, Dropbox 3.18.1 file sharing client, MPlayer SVN-r37590 video player, VLC Media Player 2.2.2, Mesa 11.1.1 3D Graphics Library, and X.Org Server 1.18.1 display server are installed by default in the 4MLinux 17.0 operating system.

Users will also be able to set up a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MariaDB and PHP) server thanks to the pre-installed Apache 2.4.20 web server, MariaDB 10.1.13 database server, as well as the PHP 5.6.20, Perl 5.22.1, and Python 2.7.11 programming languages. 4MLinux 17.0 is currently based on the long-term supported Linux 4.4.1 kernel.
