4MLinux Allinone Edition, a Linux distro focusing on the Maintenance (system rescue Live CD), Multimedia (e.g., playing video DVDs), Miniserver (using the inetd daemon), and Mystery (Linux games) 4M editions, has just reached version 8.1, finally exiting the Beta stages.

The 4MLinux developer is quite a busy bee, making a lot of variations for just one distro, and the Allinone Edition is just an offshoot that contains pretty much everything that can be found in all the other versions.

“The status of the 4MLinux 8.1 series has been changed to STABLE. The final release has all the features included in 4MLinux 8.1 Rescue Edition, 4MLinux 8.1 Media Edition, 4MLinux 8.1 Server Edition, and 4MLinux 8.1 Game Edition,” said the developers in the official announcement.

In order for us to get a glimpse of what is included in 4MLinux Allinone Edition, we will present a short summary for each distro that has been mentioned.

4MLinux 8.1 Rescue Edition is an operating system that has apps used in backup and recovery, like antivirus protection (Clam AntiVirus 0.98.1 with ClamWin), system backup (4MLinux Backup Scripts 8.1), data recovery (GNU ddrescue 1.17, TestDisk 6.14), and more.

4MLinux 8.1 Media Edition on the other hand has one purpose, that of running all kinds of media files, and comes with numerous applications such as MPlayer SVN-r36573, SMPlayer, SMTube SVN-r5993, FFMpeg Git-2014-01-11, FLAC 1.3.0, GStreamer 0.10.36, LAME 3.99.5, MAD 0.15.2b, and more.

4MLinux Server Edition is a special distribution based on Busybox, Dropbear, OpenSSH, and Putty. It also comes with 4MLinux Firewall, Clam AntiVirus, Polipo with TOR, a VNC server, MariaDB, SQLite, and more.

The last Linux distribution on the list is 4MLinux 8.1 Game Edition and includes classic “shoot'em up” games (Abuse, Doom, Freedoom, Heretic, Hexen, Quake I, and Quake II), Liero (a realtime “Worms-like” game), Lincity (a construction and management simulation game), space shooters (XGalaga, Kobo Deluxe), and DOSBox 0.74 with some freeware DOS games, GNU Chess 6.1.1 with WinBoard 4.7.33, and a few others.

Please keep in mind that the 4MLinux distribution doesn't directly boot in the desktop session. After you enter the user name and the password of your choosing you must write the following command in the terminal:

startx

This command will start the X session and you won't have to do it after you install the distribution. A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. Users can also download 4MLinux Allinone Edition 8.1 right now from Softpedia.
