Since 4K resolution is the new big deal on the entertainment market (UHD video quality, 3840 x 2160 pixels), Sony is, understandably enough, exploiting it for all it is worth.

The company has officially introduced the FMP-X1 4K media player, along with a 4K video distribution service.

Of course, it isn't totally accurate to say that Sony has finished setting up the distribution network, since it will only go live in fall.

Still, Sony revealed the existence of the device, and the upcoming arrival of the service, in a recent press release.

The company didn't share the specifications of the player, but did promise it would be possible to get it as a replacement for their existing Sony player when the service goes live later this year.

We know for certain that USB 3.0 is supported and that there will be more than one video output available. Blu-ray disks should be supported as well.

Sony has also released a bunch of 4K UHD monitors, but we will see to them separately.
