Rumors about ARRI developing a huge 6K 65mm digital camera have been flying around for some time now, but now it appears the company has finally made the device official. So say hello to the ARRI ALEXA 65, one of the most cutting-edge cinema cameras available on the market.
Surely, the product is not targeted at the average Joe, but at professionals activating in the field of film-making.
The ALEXA 65 makes 4K cameras look like babies
The ALEXA 65 is built around the A3X sensor, which is touted to be largest high-performance motion picture sensor available on the market today.
ARRI says the sensor has a 54.12 mm x 25.59 mm active imaging area, which tops the technology found in the film gate of ARRI’s 765 65mm film camera.
With the ALEXA, users can record up 6560 x 3102 resolution photosites, with a dynamic range of more than 14 stops.
The design of the sensor takes advantage of the tradition set with the ALEXA XT, so film features such as colorimetry and dynamic range will be compatible with other members of the ALEXA family.
This aspect is important for those looking to mix 35 mm format ALEXA XT with larger 65 mm format ALEXA 65, without wasting time on additional image color corrections.
Moving deeper into specification land, we’ll tell you the camera boasts 5-perf 65mm (full camera aperture) and has as ARRI XPL mount (64mm diameter).
In the ISO department, the values are set between 200 – 3200 with the base being 800. The output is delivered in uncompressed ARRIRAW.
ALEXA takes advantage of an electronic shutter with 5° - 358°, adjustable in 1/10° increments. The device is capable of shooting 0.75 to 27fps and upgrade for 60 fps is planned for early 2015.
ALEXA 65 borrows design cues from ALEXA 35
The ALEXA 65 is similar in design with the ALEXA 35mm, but the new camera has been designed as a standalone camera that arrives complete with lenses and viable workflow solutions.
ARRI got quite creative and rehoused Hasselblad lenses to work with their brand new, shiny sensor – 8 primes ranging from 24 to 300mm and 50 to 110mm zoom.
Pricing and availability for this behemoth hasn’t been disclosed for the time being, but you can expect it to be huge, really huge.
