Today, wireless services provider Verizon Wireless has expanded its 4G LTE network in five new markets, and also made available for purchase a new smartphone to connect to it, the Spectrum by LG.

The new device was made official last week during the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as one of the six new LTE-capable devices unveiled to the world.

It is powered by Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and should get a taste of the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform in the near future.

At Verizon, the smartphone is listed with a price tag of $199.99 (155 Euros) attached to it with the signing of a two year contract agreement. If purchased contract free, it would cost $599.99 (466 Euros).

The new device packs a large 4.5” True HD screen with Corning Gorilla Glass, along with a 1.5 GHz Dual–Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 application processor and 1GB RAM for increased performance capabilities.

The handset also features 4GB of Flash memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space and with a 16GB card included from the start.

On the back, the new device sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for recording video in 1080p high definition. There is also a 1.3MP camera on the front, with support for video calling.

The smartphone comes with support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as with 4G Mobile Hotspot capabilities.

It also features a series of pre-loaded applications from Verizon, along with various services from the wireless carrier and from Google.

“There’s no waiting to watch, with pre–loaded premium apps like Netflix, Verizon Video, and ESPN ScoreCenter with HD video. Enjoy hours of entertainment from the palm of your hand. Then tap into the Android Market and access an ever–expanding array of apps,” Verizon explains.
