The sustained Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks organized by 4chan members have also affected the IFPI and RIAA websites over the weekend.

As we reported on Saturday, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) website was attacked by members of the 4chan image board.

The website eventually ended up experiencing a total download of almost 22 hours and the attackers moved on to target the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

According to an announcement posted by the organizers, the MPAA has installed some form of protection, but is not out of the woods yet, as the group plans to return to it later.

"The MPAA has bought new protection at heavy cost, and yet we are still sure to succeed against them," the new manifesto reads.

Before moving onto hitting riaa.com, the group also attacked ifpi.org, the website of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

As a result the IFPI site was offline almost 15 hours, but it's not certain if this was the work of some 4chan members acting on their own or an "officially sanctioned" attack.

It also looks like RIAA fought back. The 4chan announcement speaks of RIAA legal notices affecting the IRC servers used to coordinate the attacks.

According to the attackers, their actions represent a retaliation for an Indian company called Aiplex Software DDoSing torrent sites on behalf of movie studios.

However, most of this company's clients are Bollywood film production houses. Their only connection to the Amercian movie industry is through a local 20th Century Fox subsidiary.

Of course, Aiplex Software's website has also been targeted and has suffered downtimes of over 24 hours.

Most participants to these coordinated DDoS efforts, use a rather primitive HTTP flood tool called "Low Orbit Ion Canon" (LOIC), made famous by Iranian protesters last year.

However, there is information suggesting that some involved people might also have access to botnets, armies of computers infected with malware.

This is one incredibly misinformed article. Where are your sources?

Anonymous didn't attack the IPLI, that wasn't on our agenda. Furthermore, our IRCs were not hit by a RIAA retaliation, but from unnamed rogues among us who wanted nothing more but to get in our way.

But, it did get a few things right: the MPAA is still a primary target, and that the MPAA is using anti-DDoS measures against us. Naturally, we have adapted.

Nice to know you're paying some attention though.

The IFPI.org website was also down during the weekend, according to http://pandalabs.pandasecurity.com/4chan-users-organize-ddos-against-mpaa/

But I did mention that it might be the work of some people acting on their own and not related to the larger coordinated attacks.

As far as the RIAA legal notices go, they are mentioned in the announcement. I included a screenshot of it. Click to enlarge.

I have mixed feelings about the attack, as do most people probably because honestly it is next to impossible to have any real sympathy for the RIAA or MPAA considering their history.

Still, unlike the pirate bay which depends on its site, the RIAA and MPAA won't be crippled by their site being down. This is a way to call attention to a cause, but if the attackers are serious about their freedoms, there needs to be more of a strategy than just DDOS.

Of course they don't really, truly care (at least not most of them)...they are just looking to have fun.

>"made famous by Iranian protesters last year."

LOIC was created by Anon for Anon and has been in Anon's arsenal for a very, very long time as well as some other scripts to cause Denial of Service.

It was a tool given to the Iranians by Anonymous who also spear headed the Iranian protests!

Google * do you use it?

Also this is a violation of 1
