The national holiday was all over social media

Every April 20, weed enthusiasts around the world celebrate their love for the herbal drug by smoking cannabis around the time of 4:20, although the exact hour matters less.

Despite the fact that the origins of the unofficial American holiday are not that well known, not even to self-proclaimed weed lovers, potheads everywhere take part in this annual event, and some even take to social media to promote it.

So, it’s no wonder that #Happy420 was trending on Twitter or that there were several Reddit threads marking the particular occasion. Not to mention the wave of Instagram or Facebook pictures of people actively participating in the celebration. A day after the event, #420Regrets started trending, with people sharing some of their most embarrassing moments of the day.

And there are enough reasons to celebrate given that medical marijuana is now legal in 23 states. But the thing is that the celebration is not just about getting baked, as people organize different competitions like the Colorado Cannabis Cup, which has a legit website from where you can buy tickets and all.

The event has become known worldwide

Even the police got involved in the event, just not as one would expect. The Denver Police Department took to Twitter in their attempt to blend in with their community, expressing their support for the events taking place but at the same time advising consumers to act responsibly and beware of the risky effects that weed could have on them.

Despite the fact that there are quite a few people who condemn the event, it cannot be denied that besides the medical benefits that even doctors have agreed upon, one cannot ignore the economic implications brought forward by the legalization of the drug. Reports show that the state has managed to get millions of dollars in tax revenue.

But 4/20 does not have the same meaning for everyone. For some people who are less keen on drugs of any sort, this day refers to Hitler’s birthday. Potheads were so absorbed in celebrating the event that completely forgot about the other "meaningful" occasion.

A comedy group known as Hotel For Dads even released an iPhone commercial parody on their official YouTube Channel on this special day, in which Siri is teaching an inexperienced user to smoke weed (viewer discretion is advised).

420 day never goes by unnoticed, and with a little help from the social media, it seems to be getting more popular every year.
