Apple discloses ‘first weekend’ sales figures for its newest baby

Apple has announced it has sold over four million iPhone 4S handsets just three days after its launch on October 14. The doesn’t specify that the figure actually includes pre-orders that had kicked off a few days back.

Although the iPhone 4S did go on sale this past weekend, the phone had been up for pre-order for over a week. Apple, however, says the company sold over four million units in its first weekend. Granted, the phone did go on sale Friday, October 14th.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever,” added Schiller.

Apple also confirmed that iOS 5 has been downloaded by more than 25 million customers around the world in just five days since its release. More than 20 million customers have signed up for iCloud too.

Those who wish to grab an iPhone 4S today can do so in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK. The phone will be available in two more dozen countries later this month. By the end of the year, more than 70 countries will carry the handset.
