The LSV-5S8T/4CQWZ is every bit the box-like storage-centric PC

As odd as it might seem to some that Logitech deals in network-attached storage devices, it shouldn't be too shocking to see a confirmation that yes, the Swiss company really isn't solely restricted to peripherals.

That doesn't matter here though, because the company that has formally introduced the LSV-5S8T/4CQWZ NAS server (complete with hot-swappable bays) is not Logitech, but the Japanese IT player Logitec.

That means that any one of the five drives can be removed at any time, without affecting the others or needing a shutdown, whether they are HDDs (hard disk drives), SSDs (solid-state drives) or HHDs/SSHDs (hybrid hard drives / solid state hybrid drives).

That's not really an asset though, more like an expected capability nowadays. The real perks are the following.

First off, the product is equipped with two Gigabit Ethernet ports, not just one, as well as four USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 connectors.

Also, the storage devices, be they four 2 TB WD Red drives or other units, are configured in RAID 0, 1 or 5 model.

Furthermore, the LSV-5S8T/4CQWZ possesses 4 GB of DDR3 RAM (random access memory) and, more importantly, a 1.6 GHz VIA Nano X2 CPU.

In other words, the Logitec 4-bay network-attached storage server is, like all NAS units, actually a sort of box-shaped computer with just the minimum computing capabilities needed to cope with a high-capacity storage array.

The Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2012 Workgroup Edition operating system runs everything.

As for the design, the cube-shaped case comes in a black theme with a red part above the small display located near the bottom. The four bays are kept behind a locked front door.

Sales of the Logitec LSV-5S8T/4CQWZ should start around the middle of next month (August 2013), for the price of 228,000 Yen, which corresponds to about $2,271 / €1,726.
