Dassault Systèmes (DS), a France-based expert in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, has announced 3DVIA Mobile HD for iPad, a first for the industry, according to the makers.

3DVIA Mobile HD is an interactive 3D model viewer for the iPad which allows users to access, view and interact with thousands of high-quality models hosted on the 3DVIA.com content warehouse.

Softpedia previously covered the iOS offerings from Dassault Systèmes, when the company announced 3DVIA Mobile, its first iPhone and iPod touch application.

“Unlike other 3D model viewers, 3DVIA Mobile HD allows users of most 3D modeling software packages to connect to 3DVIA.com and share their work on the iPad platform,” the company claims.

The software makes it extremely intuitive to find and analyze a 3D model up close, mostly thanks to the interactive 3D viewer with pan, zoom and inspect functionality.

To get up and running with the app, users must create a free 3DVIA.com account, upload 3D assets to the site, then connect with 3DVIA Mobile HD to showcase the assets on the iPad.

The service accepts content in over 30 formats, including 3DXML, .dae (COLLADA), .3ds, .obj, IGES, STEP and .kmz, the company claims.

Of course, a wide range of existing 3D models for all kinds of things is readily accessible to 3DVIA Mobile HD users. A simple search is all it takes to bring one up for analyzing.

“Our success with the earlier 3DVIA Mobile application for the iPhone confirmed that users value instant access to high-quality 3D content on mobile devices,” said Lynne Wilson, CEO, 3DVIA, Dassault Systèmes.

“3DVIA Mobile HD is an even better way to share rich product information with customers, prospects and partners. It delivers interactive 3D to your fingertips, and demonstrates the iPad’s potential as a business communication tool and platform,” Wilson added,

According to the company, “3DVIA Mobile HD retains the speed, fluid movement and easy-to-navigate interface of the iPhone app.”

Undoubtedly the software will run much smoother on the iPad, which boasts Apple’s A4 chip, compared to the performance of the app on a first-generation iPhone.

In addition to this, 3DVIA Mobile HD takes advantage of the increased screen real estate and resolution of the iPad, turning a once simple and handy app into a powerful 3D content demonstration tool, Dassault Systèmes notes.

Available from the iTunes App Store for a special introductory price of $1.99 USD, 3DVIA Mobile HD requires an iPad running iOS 3.2 or later. The software normally costs $4.99.
