Video game hardware developer Nintendo has announced that in its first eight months the new Nintendo 3DS handheld has managed to sell more on the United States market than the original DS.

Regie Fils-Aime, who is the leader of Nintendo of America, stated, “In sales through this past Saturday - 8 months - has outsold the full 12 months of the original DS.”

He added, “During that 12 months time, the original DS sold 2.37 million and we just surpassed that this past Saturday, so we've got real good momentum going into the holidays.”

After a very good first few weeks the 3DS saw a slowdown which prompted Nintendo to cut its price significantly in August and then got a boost from which profile video game releases like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Nintendo needs the 3DS to do better during the crucial Christmas shopping period because from February next year it will have to compete with the PlayStation Vita from Sony.
