Nintendo says the service will be down for 14 hours

Nintendo says that it will launch a major maintenance period for the online services linked to the 3DS handheld today, at 5 PM Pacific Time, set to last for 14 hours, until 7 AM on March 11.

The company is not saying exactly what kind of improvements it plans to introduce to the network infrastructure or how it will improve overall player experience.

Nintendo says that it will offer more information when the maintenance period is done.

Fans are speculating that the changes made to the online infrastructure of the 3DS are designed to make the service more reliable as a set of major new titles will be offered on the eShop.

Traditionally, Nintendo has been focused on online experiences, but fans of the Pokemon series, with its most recent releases X & Y, regularly use it to battle each other and trade content.

The 14-hour-long maintenance period will certainly affect them the most, but as long as the service is more reliable in the future, that’s a rather small price to pay.

The 3DS has been a success for Nintendo and it makes sense for them to improve its features, especially given the worse than expected performance of the Wii U home console.
