Video game hardware maker is launching a new firmware update for the 3DS handheld, which does not introduce any significant new functionality but might be intended to eliminate the region-free hack that a team of modders created.

The company says that the 7.1.0-15U update is only designed to improve the overall stability of the system and change minor elements of the user experience.

At the same time, the company states, “any existing or future unauthorized technical modification of the hardware or software of your Nintendo 3DS system, or the use of an unauthorized device in connection with your system, may render the system permanently unplayable.”

This might be a sign that the company is planning to eliminate the region-free hack that a group of modders has created in order to allow 3DS users to play titles from other territories that are not available via other means.
