Following an announcement made for the Japanese market, Sony is now saying that full three dimensional videogames are coming to the United States PSN, after the PlayStation 3 received a firmware update, which enabled the technology in April. This comes just as the entertainment giant is launching its line up of 3D-capable High Definition television sets under the Bravia brand.

John Koller, who is the director of hardware marketing at Sony, revealed on the official blog of the company, “We’re extremely excited to be at the helm of a whole new gaming experience unlike anything offered before.” He also announced that the company was aiming to soon deliver another firmware update to the PlayStation 3 allowing the home console to play back movies from the Blu-ray in full three dimensional mode.

Those who are interested in 3D gaming can look forward to playing WipEout HD, a racing videogame focusing on the experience of speed and on racetracks with complex turns, Super Stardust HD, a frenzied shooter that throws the player in a cosmic battleground and PAIN, which comes with two new modes created especially for 3D, called Alien Toss and Ice Breaker.

Gamers will also be able to experience a demo version of MotorStorm, featuring a buggy on the Kanaloa bay track. It seems those who already own the game will be able to get patches for them that enable the 3D elements.

In an effort to show off 3D gaming to as many people as possible, Sony is also saying that those who pick up Bravia TVs will be getting vouchers allowing them to sign into the PSN and to download the four games mentioned above, being able to enjoy more than 100 hours of game time.

Sony is determined to make 3D gaming a standard as soon as possible and use the advantage to gain market share on both Microsoft and Nintendo. With Killzone 3 coming next year, also touting 3D capabilities, it will be interesting to see how the gaming public responds to the new technology.
