Recognizing the large potential of 3D entertainment and determined to cut a large slice of the 3D market for itself, Sony has set up a partnership with RealD through which it will license some of its equipment and technology. This will eventually enable the Japanese company to provide consumer-oriented 3D technology aimed for use at home.

Among the licensed technologies will be RealD's 3D eyewear, which is already compatible with Sony's 3D display equipment. The pact comes at the closing period of a year that marked a string of 3D cinematography releases, among which are strong titles such as the DreamWorks-developed "Monsters vs. Aliens," and Twentieth Century Fox's "Avatar."

"Sony has its proprietary LCD panel driving technology to reproduce full HD 3D images on the screen of new 'BRAVIA' LCD TVs, which will work in sync with new 3D eyewear based on RealD's technology. We are excited to work with RealD in bringing 3D to the home." said Hiroshi Yoshioka, Executive Deputy President, Officer in charge of Consumer Products and Devices Group, Sony Corporation.

The California-based RealD has already contributed with 3D technology in the making of three-dimensional movies and other applications. Sony did not disclose the financial implications of the deal but what is known is that the pact does not grant Sony exclusivity. This means that RealD may license the same technology to other companies, further promoting its products.

Through this agreement, Sony hopes to begin supplying the market with a steady flow of 3D products starting as early as 2010. Besides licensing the stereoscopic RealD Format and the technology for making 3D eyewear, whether active or passive, the two will also collaborate on implementing support for the 3D format on the former's current and future products.

Sony has not given any specific timetables concerning the eventual release of products with RealD technology. However, what is known is that the Japanese company will be showcasing its own display and consumer electronics at CES in January 2010.
