3D Systems and The Hershey Company enter multi-year agreement

3D printing has already entered the food industry, with such stellar examples as making pizza for astronauts and the ChefJet 3D Printer that makes sweets, but it's only now, with the agreement between 3D Systems and The Hershey Company, that we get to see just how fast things are moving.

The Hershey Company might just be the biggest name in the chocolate industry. Thus, any endorsement on its part holds weight.

It so happens that the chocolate expert has made a deal with 3D Systems for developing 3D printed edibles.
The agreement is a multi-year contract that will explore and develop means of using 3D printing to make confections.
We have a feeling that wedding cake topper selfies will be minor achievements soon enough because of all this.
"We believe that innovation is key to delivering relevant, compelling consumer experiences with our iconic brands," said Hershey Vice President William Papa.

"Whether it's creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats into the future."

For its part, 3D systems is probably glad to have someone explore food-making methods, since it (admittedly extensive) expertise has mostly had to do with metals, ceramics and plastics so far.

Its 3D scan-based design, freeform modeling and inspection tools are bound to start jumping through hoops to meet the demands of his new branch.
"Mainstreaming 3D printing is fundamental to our success and we are fortunate to partner with Hershey, the largest producer of quality chocolate in North America and a global leader in chocolate and confection to expand the 3D printing experience into delectable edibles," said 3D Systems Chief Technology Officer Chuck Hull.
Now we just have to wait and see if The Hershey Company and 3D systems manage to one-up Belgian chocolate masters.
