Not long ago, doctors were able to 3D print a hip implant that restored a teenager's ability to walk. Now, we learn that something along those lines is being planned for dogs.

Fusion Implants, a spin-off from the University of Liverpool headed by Dr. Chris Sutcliffe, has received funds from Enterprise Ventures (EV), which manages The North West Fund for Venture Capital.

It also got money from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB).

The funding will come in two tranches, with the first being of around £100,000 / $167,000 / €121,000.

Fusion implants will spend the next two years working on 3D printed canine knee replacements (to repair cruciate ligament, or CCL, damage), as well as other implants.

“The use of 3D printing gives greater design freedom than conventional manufacturing techniques and also allows us to combine solid and porous sections for optimum strength and biological performance,” said Dr. Jones, general manager at Fusion Implants.
