Among other things, it's got LEDs that make it glow

Gas masks might not be the first thing you think of when being told the words “sci fi outfit” but it was inevitable that someone eventually decided to apply the good old makeover to that particular piece of paraphernalia.

Noe and Pedro Ruiz, two brothers that are also Adafruit members, have created a 3D printed Halloween mask that tries to evoke the games of Fallout, Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy and pretty much every other sci fi film there is that has a scene with the protagonist insulated from the environment for whatever reason.

Well, except dead space and every other title where the helmet doubles as air purifier, but I digress.

The video below shows the 3D printed gas mask they came up with, complete with flashing LEDs.

The electronics weren't 3D printed of course, but that's no shock. What you should keep in mind is that you'll need to know your way around a solder and glue gun if you want to make one of these yourself.

The step-by-step details are available on the Adafruit Learning System. Highlights include the GEMMA mic-controller (runs the NeoPixel rings and laser diode) and the lithium polymer battery that powers everything.

I wouldn't count on this thing to actually protect you from toxic air though.
