3D gaming is still in its infancy, according to Sony, as the company, which is a heavy supporter of the technology with its PlayStation 3 console and Bravia 3DTV sets, believes studios working on such titles are barely scratching the surface of what's possible with the new tech.

Sony has been a big proponent of games that use stereoscopic 3D, as many of its recent PlayStation 3 exclusives have come with support for the technology, including Killzone 3 or the more recent Resistance 3. With the trend being picked up by other studios like Treyarch, with Call of Duty: Black Ops, or Epic Games, with Gears of War 3, the trend is slowly growing in size.

Sony believes it still has lots of growing to do, as studios are barely scratching the surface of what's possible with 3D and other technologies like motion controls, at least according to Mick Hocking, the company's London Studios manager.

"Looking at the future of 3D, I think we’ve really only just begun to realize its potential as a creative medium. With the combination of 3D and motion control gaming with PlayStation Move, I think titles like Resistance 3 are just scratching the surface of what’s possible," he told Industry Gamers.

"For those who may have been fans of some of the ‘virtual reality’ projects of the late 1980s and early 1990s, improvements in processing power and 3D screen resolution are creating virtual spaces that are more realistic than ever. If you look at what PlayStation is doing now and the innovations that are being worked on in our Studios in 3D gaming, we’re living in one of the most thrilling eras to be a gamer," he added.

Sony's special 3D efforts include the upcoming PlayStation-branded 3D Display, which offers a budget-oriented experience, but also more outlandish things like the special 3D visor that's been confirmed for a North American release later this year.
