A new record

Informa Telecoms & Media analysts consider that by the end of 2005, there will be 380 million new cell phone users.

This would break the previous record (2004), when 335 million new users were recorded. But this cannot be regarded as a great success because this increase didn't take place on the mature markets, but on emergent ones, where the prices are smaller.

The promoting campaigns in which operators offer smaller prices and prepaid cards to the subscriber's friends and family are another reason for this increase.

The Informa Telecoms & Media report says that this increase was caused by the operators' capacity to address new market segments, such as that of users under 14.

Informa warned that 2006 might not be as good, because there will be significant decreases on major markets, like Russia and India.
