Since the second version isn't quite as weak as the first, there are chances

The first $35 Aakash tablet from Datawind got some harsh words thrown its way, but the company already has the second generation out.

We know that Datawind has a contract with the Indian Government, for distributing the slate to students.

Now we learn that, since Aakash II isn't quite as weak as the first, schools in Philadelphia, US, are considering it too (Wilco Electronics is negotiating the procurement deal).

Since the cheap item can show video, administer quizzes and hold class resources (textbooks, etc.) in electronic format, uses can definitely be found, especially since not every kid is going to have a PC.

On the flip side, this plan is still in early stages, so it can just as easily fall apart.

Nevertheless, we feel it is just a matter of time before all schools become high-tech, so adopting slates may be the first real step in that direction.
