Most displays with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels are larger than 40 inches in diagonal, but EIZO wanted the option to be more readily available on things besides television sets, so it made a new monitor.

Said new monitor bears the name of FlexScan EV3237 and combines most of the standard assets of a professional display while fitting in a fairly small package of 31.5 inches.

Admittedly, there are smaller 4K monitors out there, but when you're working with a complex CAD/CAM file for a 3D game of CGI movie, it can help to have a large enough screen. For perspective, if nothing else.

Multitasking is also easier on a display of over 30 inches, since it lets you easily have two applications open side by side, without it seeming cramped.

That said, the display technology is IPS, or in-plane switching. It is slower than TN, but has wider viewing angles.

Also, despite the brightness disadvantage of IPS, the new FlexScan EV3237 boasts 300 cd/m2, even though 250 cd/m2 would have probably been sufficient.

Then again, EIZO didn't do “sufficient” here. Even the response time is a healthy 5 ms instead of the 8 ms that professional IPS screens usually settle for.

Moving on, the viewing angles are of 178 degrees, both horizontally and vertically. It means that the color shift and contrast changes when viewed at an angle are minimal. Not completely absent like on the new IPS-NEO display technology, but it's not like any TVs or monitors exist that use that yet.

Besides the technical specs, EIZO relies on Picture-in-Picture technology to lure people in. It can display content from two signal sources at once, like a PC and a TV. All you need to do is connect more than one such source via DisplayPort (two ports exist), HDMI, or DVI.

In fact, you can display content from all four sources at the same time, by splitting the TV screen into 4 sections. So you could be working on a project while holding a video chat, watching a surveillance feed, and surfing the Internet.

Finally, EIZO's FlexScan EV3237 boasts LED backlighting, a hybrid of DC (direct current) and high-speed PWM (post-width modulation) technology (no screen flicker, for low eye fatigue) and adjustable brightness (down to 1 % of the maximum). As for the energy efficiency, it is good enough for Energy Star 6.0 and TCO Certified Displays 6.0 compliance.

The EIZO FlexScan EV3237 will ship starting in September with a stand featuring 139 mm height adjustment (5.47 inches), 40° tilt (-5° - 35°), and 344° swivel. Sadly, the price is unknown.
