Beachgoers in Cantabria, Spain have had the unique opportunity to admire a giant squid, an almost mythical creature that humans rarely set their eyes upon.

The Architeuthis Dux is 30 feet (9 meters) long and it measures roughly 400 pounds (182 kg). The species usually lives at maritime depths of anywhere between 1,000 and 3,000 feet (305 – 915 meters).

This species of squid was first captured on camera in 2004, Grind TV reports. Japanese researchers shot live images of the giant.

The carcass of the Cantabria squid has been found almost intact and it has been transported to the Maritime Museum of Cantabria.

It has been frozen, and it will either by dissected or put on display in the museum. A final decision is yet to be made in this respect.
