Wireless carrier 3 UK is reportedly getting ready for the launch of a number of no less than six handsets powered by Google's Android operating system, the latest news around the web suggests. It seems that the operator is set to enhance its offering of handsets powered by Google's mobile operating system, something that other carriers also seem interested in.

David Kerrigan, head of Internet services at 3 UK, reportedly stated that the mobile phone carrier was set to show a heavy focus on the Android platform for the ongoing year. It seems that the wireless operator is confident that Google's mobile client can help it boost sales, this being the reason for which more Android-based phones will be launched in the near future.

Currently, the service provider has only one Android-powered device included in its offering, the HTC Hero. As for the future Android devices the carrier plans on launching, they should arrive from other handset vendors too, it seems, including Samsung and Sony Ericsson. According to a recent article on Mobile News, 3 UK is already working with these companies for the release of handsets.

In addition, Kerrigan is also cited as stating the the wireless carrier plans on making the Skype and Spotify applications available on more mobile phones for its customers during the ongoing year. The company will show a focus on including these solutions on low-end devices, it seems, something that will make them more appealing to customers, and it also intends to integrate the apps in future Android phones.

“We are focussed heavily on providing our mobile Internet-powered applications and will make them available to more people this year. The Spotify application will be available on all Android devices we launch on the network. These applications have been important in driving mobile data and will be available as an add-on for all contract tariffs going forward,” Kerrigan stated.
