Three months into the “2 billion” announcement, Apple has confirmed surpassing yet another App Store landmark – 3 billion downloads! Currently hosting around 100,000 applications for both iPhone and iPod touch, the App Store has been a major hit for Apple, helping drive iPhone sales, while attracting newcomers.

“Apple today announced that more than three billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store by iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide,” Apple says. “iPhone and iPod touch customers in 77 countries worldwide can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel,” the Mac maker’s press release reads.

Also worth noting is that these download figures are based on initial downloads, and do not include updates, as previously confirmed by the Mac maker.

A statement from the company’s iconic CEO, Mr. Steven P Jobs, is also included with the report. “Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” he says. “The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon,” Apple’s CEO arrogantly concludes.

The press release ends with the company’s typical, five-line paragraph where it explains how it ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s and now rules on more than just the computer front. The truly revolutionary App Store has inspired many – including LG, Research In Motion (RIM), Nokia, Google, Palm and Microsoft – to take steps and create their own versions of an application store. None of them are even close to achieving the popularity of the App Store. In the meanwhile, Apple fans are preparing for a new device that would reportedly use App Store content as well.
