Global LED light bulb shipments will reach 1.25 billion in 2014

Usually, when we talk about LED technology (light emitting diodes), it's in the context of LCDs, but we shouldn't forget that lighting systems have begun to use the technology a lot too.

In fact, a quarter of all LED chips shipped in 2013 are expected to be used in light systems by the end of 2013.

Back in 2012, the percentage was of 20%, so the progress makes sense. It's actually a little slow really.

LED light bulbs have an average luminous efficiency of 77lm/W, set to grow to 60lm/US$ in 2014 and 110lm/W in 2017.

All in all, I can understand why Taiwan-based LED makers gave this forecast, and why it's believed that global LED light bulb shipments will reach 1.254 billion units in 2014 (84% hike on year), to 9.7% of all lighting products.
