Although the sequel to the hit comedy “21 Jump Street” was not the hit the studio was expecting, Sony somehow seems to think that there is more money to be made out of the franchise, which is why they've greenlit the third movie in the franchise, making it now officially a trilogy.

Deadline has the insider report that Rodney Rothman, one of the men who worked on the script for “22 Jump Street,” has already been hired by Sony to pen the screenplay for the movie “23 Jump Street.” Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the two men who directed the second movie, haven't yet agreed to come on board, but they are said to be giving their input for the screenplay.

Apart from starring in the third movie, Channing and Jonah have also taken on the roles of co-producers, together with Neal Moritz. The studio and the production company handling the project are said to be keeping the door open for the two directors, Lord and Miller, but they have yet to sign on the dotted line.

On a $50 million budget, “22 Jump Street” managed a not-too-shabby $190 million at the domestic box office, and an even more impressive $319 million worldwide. As soon as these figures keep coming in in ticket sales, we're bound to see more of these films in the future.

Just like with “Ride Along,” “Jump Street” is undeniable proof that the buddy-cop genre is making a comeback in a big way.
