A woman from Richmond, Virginia has recovered a $22K (€16.7K) ring that she lost after dropping it in the toilet.

The ring not only fell in, but it was flushed into the abyss that is the home sewage and sanitation system.

The unnamed owner of the ring wasn't even at home at the time, she was visiting friends in Hampton and was forced to ask them if she could look in their sewage system for the ring.

According to the Inquisitr, on Friday, May 10, she was washing her hands after using the bathroom when she dropped the pricey ring. The toilet was already flushing when it fell inside, much to her despair.

She had to call plumbers at her friends' home to recover it, an operation that took several days but was unsuccessful.

On Monday, May 13, the woman contacted Hampton Public Works when workers at the plumbing company she employed were unable to get the ring out, even after pumping raw sewage from the septic tank.

Filters were set in place and the piece of jewelry was recovered on Tuesday. Employees who participated in the operation were thanked for their efforts and rewarded with $25 (€19) gift cards.

The owner wrote a letter to the City of Hampton, thanking them for getting back the expensive, diamond-encrusted ring she received as an anniversary present. A photo of it, taken after it was given back to its owner, is attached to this news article.

“We cannot express enough gratitude to everyone who had a role in recovering this very special ring to us. It’s not only the monetary value of the ring, but also the sentimental value that could not be replaced,” she said.

“Please do anything and everything you can to acknowledge their dedication, honesty and hard work,” she added.
