Actually You Can Upgrade the RAM in a 21.5” iMac (Late 2012) Model

There seems to be some confusion regarding the RAM upgradability of the new iMac (Late 2012) models from Apple Inc. Apparently, some people believe the memory chips are downright soldered to the logic board making it physically impossible to swap the modules.

It was previously thought that only the 27-inch iMac (Late 2012) can have its RAM upgraded. Not true, according to a teardown analysis by iFixit, which found that even the RAM inside the 21.5-inch configuration is user-replaceable.

The only problem (and by only I mean a pretty big one) is that “You have to unglue your screen and remove the logic board in order to do so.” Not exactly the kind of tinkering you’d attempt with your sister’s hair dryer and dad’s rusty screwdrivers considering the price tag on these babies.

Nonetheless, the myth-busting iFixit confirms that the RAM inside your shiny new iMac can be upgraded indeed.

So long as you don’t mind paying an expert to pop it open for you.
