Espoo, Finland-based mobile phone maker Nokia has announced recently what it plans on delivering to its users during the upcoming year 2010, and some of you might have learned already that we'll get a re-engineered Symbian user interface. The UI surely needed a wide range of improvements, especially since more powerful handsets are being delivered to the market, and now the company made available a preview of what it has in mind for us next year.

According to Nokia, the main problem with the Symbian platform is not the operating system in itself but the user interface it comes to the market with. Since new hardware will arrive in 2010, it seems that Nokia will also deliver new software to fit with it. Some of the issues that are currently present with Symbian are expected to disappear, and new features will be added, so that users can freely enjoy large capacitive touchscreen displays, multi-touch capabilities and others more.

According to a recent article on Engadget, Nokia is also set to reduce the number of steps required for accessing different functions of the device (“2-taps to get to favorite music or video instead of 8, create an email account in 2 steps, not 4”), as well as to improve the browsing experience one receives from a Symbian-powered mobile phone. Moreover, the company also seems determined to make the UI much faster than the current one on high-end devices.

Among the other changes that are to come towards Symbian users, we should also mention the removal of a large number of user prompts (350) that seem rather annoying at the moment. In a nutshell, Nokia is aiming at turning the user interface of its operating system into something that will be jaw dropping. The entire presentation regarding the changes Symbian is expected to arrive with on the market in 2010 can be accessed here (51MB PDF file).
