There is no doubt that Twitter is gaining more and more popularity by the day, so the new milestone announced by the company should not really come as a surprise: 200 million tweets are sent each and every day.

The micro-blogging platform currently has more than 200 million users, with some of them having more than one account.

Also, some of the accounts are not active, so the majority of tweets come from the same persons every day, those who choose to share their thoughts with the rest of the world.

The fact is that people all over the world rely on Twitter to send around 200 million 140-character messages every day.

This number was announced on the official blog of the company, while also comparing the total amount of text to 8,163 copies of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, to put things in perspective.

In order to emphasize the ascendant trend Twitter has been on for the past few years, a dedicated blog post also mentions the values for 2009 (2 million tweets a day) and for 2010 (65 million a day).

“A billion Tweets are sent every five days. What’s in them? Everything about every topic imaginable” - this summarizes the entire essence of Twitter.

While most members use their real names, there are also some of them who use nicknames or pseudonyms, thus protecting their privacy when sending out all kinds of messages.

For the first six months of the ongoing year, a great deal of the trending topics on Twitter are related to the political situation, namely Mubarak, Cairo, #prayforjapan, Libia/Libya, Fukushima and Gadafi.

Another event that caught a lot of attention from people all over the world was the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton in the UK.

As can be noted, Twitter has become a platform where one can rejoice and be happy, as well as be compassionate and show support in case of tragedies.

However, these are not the only uses that can be found for Twitter, which is why they recently launched their Newsroom that is meant to offer useful tips for journalists.
