It seems that Advanced Micro Devices is not content with detailing just its desktop and mobile central processing units, so it went ahead and also released some information on its server roadmap.

As one may or may not have expected, Advanced Micro Devices was not content with just keeping silent while NVIDIA launched the GeForce GTX 580.

As such, the Sunnyvale, California-based outfit not only detailed its mobile APU roadmap, but even mentioned that its Zacate and Ontario Fusion APUs are already shipping.

Still, it seems that the company is not out of ammo yet, as it has also provided some information on its plans regarding the server market.

Those end-users up to speed with AMD's research and development efforts will know about the Bulldozer architecture.

Apparently, the current Opteron CPUs do not have sufficient cores (the best have 12 cores), meaning that their successors will add significantly more.

According to the recent announcements, AMD is preparing the Interlagos, which will have 16 cores and is slated for next year.

This is already twice as many cores as the best upcoming multi-core desktop chip, with 8 cores, which will only debut in 2012.

The real highlight of the announcement, one could say, was the Terranar chip, which will only make it to market in 2012.

Said processor has a full 20 cores and will be constructed on the 32nm manufacturing process technology.

It will have enhanced Bulldozer cores and will show up inside 2-way and 4-way Socket G2012 platforms. It will, furthermore, have PCIe Gen3 I/O and quad-channel DDR3 memory support.

There was also mention of a Sepang chip, which will be limited to 10 cores and aim for the cost-optimized, energy-efficient market.

"AMD Fusion products represent the biggest advancement in processor technology since the industry's switch to multi-core designs," observed Nathan Brookwood, research fellow at Insight 64.
