A number of 20 supermarkets from Modesto, California, operating under the Save Mart Supermarket brand were discovered to use credit card readers that were altered to function as skimming devices.

The Modesto Bee reports that a routine maintenance process revealed that 19 Lucky stores and one Save Mart store were involved in the incident.

The company now claims that all their 234 stores enhanced their security measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

“We are not aware nor have we been notified of any reports that customer accounts were compromised,” Save Mart Supermarkets’ Alicia Rockwell said.

“The appropriate authorities have been notified of this situation and Consumer Notices have been posted at credit/debit terminals in the affected stores as well as placed on our websites.”

Individuals who visited the stores lately and utilized credit cards to make purchases are advised to keep a close eye on their bank account reports to make sure no illegal transaction takes place.
