Conservationists are now asking that US President Barack Obama agree to grant legal protection to the wolves currently inhabiting the country's lower 48 states.

They say that, since 2011, when this species was taken off the Endangered Species Act, until now, a total of 2,567 gray wolves were killed by either hunters or trappers in said part of the country.

Should such slaughters continue unabated, it is very likely that the gray wolf population in the lower 48 states will soon plummet, just as it did back in the 19th century when people hunted these predators close to extinction.

“If this senseless slaughter doesn’t convince the Obama administration we need to reverse course on plans to drop wolf protections, the bloodbath will go on,” says Amaroq Weiss with the Center for Biological Diversity, as cited by Mongabay.

“States are making it very clear that they have no interest in managing wolf populations in a sustainable way,” the conservationist goes on to argue.

It is estimated that, for the time being, said part of the US is home to about 6,000 gray wolves.
