10,000RPM on 2.5-inch hard disks anyone?

Seagate announced today that it has produced the 2.5" 10K.2 Savyio series featuring 10,000RPM and server capabilities. The company announced its first 2.5" server drives late last year (Savvio 10K.1 series), being among the first producers to use perpendicular recording technology. The drives consume less than their 3.5" counterparts (5.7W for 143GB, 5.4 for 73GB) and also produce less heat, making them a favorite choice when it comes to server storage.

Smaller platters translate into faster seek times (3.8/4.4ms), while the smaller form factor allows more drives to use the same space and that also means more IOPS/U performance. The new drives are available with SAS, SCSI and as an option, fiber channel interfaces. Seagate claims that Savvio 10K.2 drives have an average failure rate of only 0.55%, even when working in a 24/7 environment, making them probably the most reliable Seagate drives ever.

Seagate has insisted on the fact that Savvio drives differ from other 2.5-inch notebook drives having more in common with Cheetah family than with the mobile Momentus line.

About 10K.2 series, John Rydning, IDC's research manager for hard disk drives stated: "Enterprise storage customers are juggling demands for space and power in addition to improved performance and cooling efficiencies in data centers. A growing number of customers are beginning to realize the benefits of a smaller 2.5-inch form factor enterprise hard disc drive as a solution to these datacenter challenges."
