The modules come in 8 GB and 16 GB capacities

DDR3 has begun to make way for DDR4 random access memory, and since Transcend is one of the best known brands in the RAM market, we're not surprised to see it contribute to the transition.

Not that the company has what's needed to jump the gun by months compared to everyone else. It still has tech constraints and roadmaps to abide by. That means that there won't be any 32 GB DIMMs until 2015.

It also means that 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs are going to be in low supply for the most part until then, even though they aren't totally out of the question even now.

However, there are other memory modules that can be released, not the least important being Registered DIMM, or RDIMM for short. RDIMM RAM modules are made for servers, and Transcend has just released two of them.

The Transcend 8GB and 16GB DDR4 2,133 MHz Registered DIMMs

In case you didn't already know, 2,133 MHz is the standard speed setting for DDR4 technology, even though the RAM can go a lot higher than that through overclocking. DDR3 can go a lot higher than that too, actually, if overclocked.

However, since this is server memory, we can call 2,133 MHz DDR4 the successor or replacement for 1,066 MHz or 1,333 MHz DDR3.

The new server-grade RAM isn't just fast though. It's also a lot more efficient than DDR3, working at 1.2 V instead of 1.5V or 1.35V like the current memory. Moreover, it comes in RDIMM and VLP RDIMM as well, where VLP stands for very low profile.

Between the capacity and the frequency, as well as everything that makes DDR4 what it is, both RAM product types should provide 17 GB/s bandwidth.

All in all, Transcend's 8 GB and 16 GB DDR4 RDIMMs, both small and full-size, will do well as supporting resource for any Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 server family processor, or processors in the case of dual-socket motherboards.

No clue yet on how much time still has to pass before AMD launches a DDR4-ready processor of its own. We'll probably see it in 2015.
