Agile Web Solutions has updated its password manager for Mac OS X, 1Password, to version 2.6.1. This is a major update to Agile Web's software, as it contains new features and some 60 improvements. A user license for 1Password costs $34.95 to buy. Owners of a previous version can upgrade to 2.6.1 for free. A demo version of the passwords manager is also available for Mac users.

Some of the most note-worthy additions are automatic login of passwords, support for the site-specific browser Fluid, improved support for Firefox 3, OmniWeb 5.7 and an expanded anti-phishing safeguard, through an online service provided by PhishTank.

By using 1Password, Mac and iPhone users can easily manage hundreds of passwords with one master key. People usually keep one or two passwords at most for their login sessions, which, although might seem like a good idea at first, doesn't help much when it comes to phishing sites.

Agile Web Solutions have also introduced the useful app to iPhones as well. The 1Password 2.5.1. password assistant for iPhone is free for registered users and it improves 1Password for iPhone, also adding support for AutoFill in Mobile Safari. With 1Password, you can take your passwords with you on a PDA or smartphone, sync between Macs using .Mac etc.

1Password is compatible with the following browsers and their respective versions: Safari 2.0+, Firefox 1.5+, Camino 1.0+, OmniWeb 5.5+, DEVONagent 2.0+, or NetNewsWire 2.1+. 1Password requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4 or later.

Interested parties should note that the master password will be used to protect your keychain data with military strength encryption. It is very important that you pick a strong password and commit it to memory.

As noted above, Mac users also have the option to download a demo of Agile Web Solutions' password manager and try it out for free.
