The exam was quite difficult by modern standards

An exam testing sample dating back to 1912 has been donated to the Bullitt County History Museum in Kentucky, and it offers an insider's glimpse into the struggles students faced.

According to museum volunteer David Lee Strange, the precious document was donated by an unnamed benefactor.

The exam would test them on eight subject matters – reading, spelling, mathematics or better said arithmetic, grammar, physiology, history, government, and geography.

Where geography is concerned, it touched on world geography, and spelling involved quite a few complex words. A sample of the spelling part of the test is featured above. The entire test can be read here.

As the museum curators express on the institution's website, some words have changed in meaning on form since the test was issued over one century ago.
