Not long ago, a Great Dane living in the US became a mother. Under any other circumstances, this piece of news would've surely gone unnoticed. The thing is that this Great Dane didn't just deliver a new generation of pooches. No Sir, it delivered an army of utterly adorable puppies.

Thus, the Great Dane's owners say that, as surprising at this may sound, their dog is now the proud mom of as many as 19 bundles of joy. The puppies are all in good health, and despite being just 3 years old, their mom is doing a great job looking after them.

Not an easy birth

The Great Dane, named Snowy, delivered its puppies about 3 weeks ago. Its owners, Brandon and Aimie Terry, knew very well that their dog was pregnant. However, they had no idea that it was carrying this many puppies in its belly.

Brandon explains that, during a visit to a local veterinary clinic in Pennsylvania, they were told that Snowy was to give birth to 15 pups. 15 might sound like a heck lot but the truth is that, when compared to 19, it really isn't all that much.

“We had made an appointment to take her into the vet, and they did an X-ray, and found out there were 15 spines in the X-ray,” the man told the press in a recent interview, as cited by Today.

Apparently, 7 of Snowy's babies were born at home. The others were delivered by the vet who looked after the Great Dane during her pregnancy. At birth, they looked more like kittens than dogs and kept making weird noises.

However, now that they are nearly a month old, they are insanely active and love nothing more than chasing each other and playing. “Right now they’re into exploring and playing, fighting with each other,” said Aimie Terry.

Quite an achievement for Snowy

Specialists say that, on average, Great Danes deliver some 8 puppies. How it was that Snowy ended up carrying 19 bundles of fur in its womb and managed to successfully give birth to all of them remains a mystery. Still, there's no denying that it was quite an achievement.

Interestingly enough, it appears that it's not Snowy who holds the record for the largest know litter of puppies. Thus, it was back in 2004 that a Neapolitan mastiff living in the UK gave birth to a mind-boggling 24 puppies. The birth was documented by Guinness World Records.
