Police in Argentina have arrested an unnamed 19-year-old accused of being the head of a sophisticated hacking network.

The suspect, the son of an information systems engineer, was detained in July at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s Security Ministry said on Friday, cited by Aljazeera. He’s believed to have hacked money transfer and online gambling websites in an effort to intercept transactions.

Authorities believe that this “super hacker” made up to $50,000 (€37,000) from the “technological cave” he set up at his house.

He was arrested as part of an operation dubbed Operation Zombie, initiated in 2012 when a web hosting provider alerted authorities of the cyberattacks.

The hacker network, reportedly comprised of at least six other individuals, also used a piece of malware to intercept online transactions. They covered up their operation by launching distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against the targeted platforms.
