It has pretty decent specs considering the connection speed

There is no way that a USB-connected display will ever match a standard monitor or TV, except maybe when USB 4.0 comes out, but by then, the various video interfaces will have evolved as well, so the point is moot.

On that encouraging note, allow us to introduce the latest product released by AOC technology, or at least one of the latest products.

Called E1759FWU, it is a 17-inch monitor equipped with Universal Serial Bus 3.0 technology instead of DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI or even VGA.

Because of that, the display doesn't have the same performance and image quality as normal ones, but it should be easier to carry around.

Also, the whole point is to provide your desktop or laptop with a way to extend the desktop workspace beyond the single monitor you already possess. It would let you, say, play a game on the main screen while holding a browser open on the second.

The DisplayLink technology was key here, since it is designed to connect computers and displays using USB Ethernet and WiFi.

The AOC E1759FWU 17-inch USB monitor

As the name says, it has a diagonal of 17 inches, which isn't that much for a desktop perhaps, but should be larger than the native screens of most laptops.

That's where the advantages end though. The native resolution is decent enough at 1600 x 900 pixels, but nothing to write home about when even 1920 x 1080 pixels Full HD is starting to be overcome by the general market.

Also, the response time is pretty modest, at 10ms, when the average for any monitor or TV is 5 ms and good ones are of 2 ms or 1 ms. Nevertheless, this isn't supposed to be a gaming display, so that shouldn't be too much of a turnoff.

Moving on, the contrast ratio is of 650:1 and the brightness is of 220 cd/m2, around 70-ish% of the regular range. The viewing angles are the most potentially troublesome though, at 90 degrees horizontal / 65 degrees vertical.

On the bright side, the AOC E1759FWU has a foldable stand that can switch from landscape to portrait model and even has auto-pivot. You can even use a VESA 75 x 75 mm mount to put it on a wall too if you want.

Availability and pricing

The AOC 17-inch USB Monitor E1759FWU should have gone up for sale by now through various retailers at $200 / €158 - €200.
