The number of pig carcasses recovered from a river in Shanghai has risen to about 16,000, and authorities are now investigating reports of dead ducks popping up in another river in the area.

As we wrote before, since the pigs surfaced in the Huangpu river, officials have remained silent on the matter, failing to explain what is causing the phenomenon.

“How can you tell they are harmless when you don’t know how the ducks died?” one Sina Weibo user comments.

Huffington Post details that locals have now come across some 1,000 duck carcasses in the Nanhe river in the same province. The animals have been disposed of in plastic bags and buried.
